Hard dolomite cracked a drilling bit!

Our funny crew showing broken carbide bit after a troubles while drilling in a hard dolomite in North Sinai, Egypt in a mission to reach the Nubian aquifer.

Drilling on earth have a lot of problem, I wonder what kind of machines and equipment we need to drill on the Mars in case of exploring for groundwater? :)

My guess is good old rotary equipment and either traditional tri-cone or PDC bits, just like we use here. Q? Are there metamorphic rocks on Mars? If so does this imply some kind of plate tectonics in the past or just contact metamorphism of sediments by intruding igneous?

  2. Good questions, I'm not sure about Mars rock types.

    Hello,

I have noticed many geologists writing to this and other blogs and discussion groups have trouble with English. I am a native speaker with degrees in geology and physics, 40 years experience, 20 of that as a teacher and I love teaching. While I can not address all of the questions or comments submitted I can easily and quickly make corrections to grammer. However I don't want it to seem that I am being critical of the writer(s) - I simply see a way to help them learn to express themselves more clearly and by doing so improve their communication of what they know about geology and also increase the rate at which they learn more about it.

Please let me know if you would like for me to do this .

    Thanks,.

  5. Improving communication for geologists is so important. In my opinion do criticize the scientific topic/blog in public and don't make it personal. On the other hand you can proofreading their English privately.
